As a Chicago engagement photographer, I’ve had the pleasure of shooting countless engagement sessions at Lurie Gardens, and I can honestly say that it never gets old. The variety of flowers and plants in the garden provide endless backdrops for romantic, timeless photos. I’m going to cut to the chase: You need a photo permit for any professional photo shoot at Lurie Gardens.

Don’t worry, it’s a pretty simple process. All you have to do is fill out an online application at least 14 days before your session. The cost is $50 for a two-hour permit, which should be plenty of time to get all the shots you want.  The photo permit fee may change so inquire with the Lurie Garden management office. Now, let’s get to the good stuff – tips for taking gorgeous engagement photos at Lurie Gardens.

1. Timing is everything. The best time to take engagement photos at Lurie Gardens is early in the morning or late in the evening, when the light is soft and golden. Avoid the middle of the day, when the sun is high in the sky and can create harsh shadows. In addition, the Chicago skyline will look washed out during midday. Avoid mid-day engagement photos at all costs!
2. Wear solid colors with minimal patterns. You do not want your outfits to compete with the background. Pick outfits that are comfortable and that you feel confident it.  Make sure your outfits don’t match! It’s better to wear clothes that compliment each other than look staged.
3. Allocate 1-2 hours for your engagement session. This spot is magical but it can get busy with tourists and locals.  Also, there may be multiple photo sessions happening at the same time. We have to be respectful of everyone visiting the garden. In order not to feel rush or stressed, allocate enough time. That way we can capture photos that look like you were the only two at Lurie Garden!
